African Library Project: Details and kickoff meeting Thurs, Mar. 29th in EWMS library at lunchtime!

EWMS Teen Korps chapter will be supporting the Solana Beach Library on a Book Collection Drive for the African Library Project to start a library in an African community.  We’ve been assigned a library in Obo-Kwahu area, Ghana – the Twenedrase Community Library.  This library will serve about 450 primary students and the community.

Our goal is to collect 1,000 pre-school through 8th grade books.  The mix of the books should be about 2/3 of the pre-school to 4th grade level and 1/3 of the 4-8th grade level with books for the community.  They also appreciate puzzles, flash cards, educational games in good condition and stationery.

There is a $500 financial obligation for this project to cover shipping the books, but we’re delighted that a community member, Ray Sutton, has offered to underwrite this.  All we have to do is promote, collect, box up and mail the items to the organization’s headquarters in New Orleans.

EWMS Teen Korps Project Leaders –

Thanks to the 3 EWMS Teen Korps members who have stepped up to take the lead on this project – Erin Bentel, Elizabeth Honeycutt and Laila Voss!  They will work under the direction of Ms. Tirona, the Solana Beach/EWMS librarian and help coordinate/lead the project.  We’re counting on additional support from all of our members in reaching out to friends, family and other organizations to collect lots of books!

Next Steps –

This Thursday, March 29th, Teen Korps members will meet in the EWMS library at lunchtime to decorate posters and collection boxes for the project.  Please join us to kick off the project and get creative!  Thanks to co-chapter leader, Mrs. Logan, who will bring a treat to serve after lunch.

Please start collecting pre-school through 8th grade books (as described above) as well as puzzles, flash cards, educational games and stationery.  Donation boxes will be placed in the library and at school during the month of April to collect these items. Details to follow.

See you in the library this Thursday at lunchtime!  Thanks for your support of the African Library Project!
